How to create a strong voice in your writing
- Become well acquainted with the text and prompt you’re writing about. Know exactly what you’re writing about before you even open microsoft word. The better you know the material, the more solid your argument or analysis will be. If you’re writing an opinion essay that is entirely from your head, write down your thoughts and organize them.
- Have a solid argument and find proof for your argument. It’s a good idea to write a thesis statement before you write anything else in a paper. Make sure you know what you’re going to argue and make sure you have proof to back up what you want to say. There’s nothing worse than getting halfway through a paper before realizing you don’t have as much evidence as you originally thought you had.
- Write in a confident manner. Don’t say “This might be why (character) does (thing).” Even if you aren’t confident about your reasoning, fake it till you make it. Say “This explains why (character) does (thing).” Try to avoid words like ‘probably’ ‘maybe’ ‘might.’ You’re making an argument and you need to make it clear that you believe what you’re saying.
- Write as if you’re arguing about something you’re very passionate about. Not many people feel particularly passionate about how Gatsby represents the American dream, but the trick is to sound like you care. Imagine that you’re having a debate with a friend about something that you care deeply about and write in a similar manner.
- Use quotes to back up your argument, but don’t let quotations take over your paper. A good writer knows when a quote is necessary or when you can simply paraphrase. You want to use quotes as evidence for your argument, so don’t use a mile long quote when a small section of the quote would suffice. The more quotes you have, the easier it is to lose your voice and argument.
